The Woman In Black Dominates Theaters In Classic Hammer Horror Form

If you are like me, an American raise on the old Hammer films, then you miss the old classic type of British films that bear Hammer signature for great horror movies during the 50s and 70s. These were the films where there was not much in blood splatters but plenty of old manner houses and castles. They were often forlorn and lonely and scared you with ashen faces in windows, dark musty cobwebbed, shrouded rooms, and corridors, and unexplainable shadows screams, moans, cries, shuffling footsteps, and knocking. In addition, these places were located in out of the way areas that the locals feared to travel and surrounded by landscapes with dark and evil looking slime filled marches.

Well, Hammer Film Productions along with CBS Films have brought back the classic horror in The Woman in Black. This film is a new adaptation of British writer Susan (Elizabeth) Hill 's thriller novel of the same name. This 1983 novel has had many incarnations since its printed debut.

The plot of the story centers on a young lawyer, Arthur Kipps, who on the request of his boss travels to Crythin Gifford, a small English coastal town where he is to examine the papers of Mrs. Alice Drablow, an elderly reclusive who died in the desolate and secluded the Eel Marsh House. Kipps job is to makes sure that his company has the decease's final will.

The Eel Marsh House is situated on the Nine Lives Causeway, which at high tide is cut off from the mainland with only the surrounding marsh and the sea for company. From the start, Kipps realizes there is a mystery about the late Mrs. Drablow, the house, the marshes, and the town's people of Crythin Gifford than he was told. It is while sorting through Mrs. Drablow's papers that Kipps begins to piece together the horror of the late residents of Eel Marsh House, and in solving the mystery, he also endures ever increasing of unexplained noises, nerve-chilling events and more sighting of the woman in black. His inquiries about the woman gains him rejection from the town's fearful people, but Mr. Daily (the man who befriended Kipps on the train) tells him that the hauntings by the woman in black is her revenge for being torn from her young son and his senseless death on the marshes.

Kipps also learns from Mr. Daily's tale that after sighting the woman in black, a child never fails to die, and sure enough, he realizes that it was after he spotted her at the graveyard adjacent to the house that the children of Crythin Gifford began to kill themselves one by one. After witnessing the woman in black at one child's death and later seeing the dead children in and around Eel Marsh House, Kipps becomes fearful for the safety of his own son and he races with time to stop his son's arrival at Crythin Gifford train station.

The story has a horrifying ending that at the same time is bittersweet.

As stated above 'The Woman in Black' has had many incarnations, which range from a novel, a BBC radio production, a stage play, a TV production on Hammer House Horror (UK only) and now the major film starring former Harry Potter star, Daniel Radcliffe.

'The Woman in Black' is a film that is a true hair-raising, jump-from-your-seat-a-minute trip into the old scary style of Hammer classic productions. A+.

While looking for a good book to buy I ran across a story Deborah Sampson, who was truly a woman ahead of her time. Deborah Sampson wasn't the type of woman to be simply satisfied with the caring husband, children and a home. No she wanted to see the the new form country and the only way she found to do so was by dressing as a man and becoming a solider in Revolutionary War. Sampson a courageous woman for her time and her life and deeds should be remembered.

Horror is master of the small screen. With Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries , The Secret Circle, Bedlam, and American Horror, fans of horror the genre are having their craving for the haunted, the macabre, the demented and the strangle (with a long vowel in this word somewhere), fulfilled big time by this fall television selection.

Like sex, fear sell, add a little a little of both to spice up the horror element and you have a hot new series. This is what has happen this fall. Nevertheless, some of the violence and sexual encounters in the series will make many conscientious parents block one or more shows, but not the diehard fans of this genre. They will be tuned in each night to enjoy their series like Big Momma enjoys her soaps. they will also enjoy being frighten a little themselves.

In my opinion, the sixth season finale of Supernatural ended as the fans never suspected. The thought of Castiel as an all-powerful god of wrath was not in the mind. I personally thought he would be drawn into Purgatory to then become Hell’s new ruler, but no, he opens the gate to Purgatory and sucks up all the souls within, (we are only assuming he took in the good souls). In any case, he is now mad with power and expects the Winchester’s brothers, Bobby and the rest of humanity to liberally bow down in adoration. IT’S BEEN A GREAT TEN YEAR!

Ten seasons ago, the then WB premièred Smallville. a youth orientated version of the Superman saga. The series was set in Smallville, which is the hometown of the Kent’s family. Before this and in 1997, another version of the Superman genre had completed its four year run, and that series was Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. So the first notion that crossed my mind when Smallville aired was “Oh not another Superman story”. It was not that Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman wasn’t a good series, it was. It was the suddenness of Smallville’s appearance that got to me. However, after these ten seasons. I can say that Smallville’s approach to the man of steel genre was a new and refreshing one. I got to see how each of the characters were interconnected and how they grew. Furthermore, I saw Clark Kent, Lex Luthor and a host of other DC Comics’ characters and superheroes turned Smallville upside down and upright again. The series grew from a shy teenage Clark with a crush on Lana Lang to the take charge and seasoned adult Clark Kent/The Blurb eager to wed Lois Lane. All I can say is great job to the cast, producers, and writers of the series. The Friday night slot where Smallville is now will have a hole in it, and its cast Tom Welling, Erica Durance, Justin Hartley, Cassidy Freeman, Allison Mack as well as its original cast members John Schneider, Annette O'Toole, Kristin Kreuk, Michael Rosenbaum and John Glover will be missed. Warner Bros has taken a great interest in bringing this Japanese creation to the life and fans of CW series will enjoy see the favorite character in another medium.

The animated version of Supernatural is directed by Eric Kripke, and stars Andrew Farrar, Jared Padalecki (yes, Jared with do the voice of his live action character, Sam), Hiroki Touchi and Yûya Uchida as the voices of the Sam and Dean Winchester.

On Wednesday, October 27, 2010, and prior to the first reading of the play How They Wrestled Until Morning by playwright Mark E. Leib, I conducted an honest one on one interview with him at the American Stage Theatre Company in St. Petersburg, Florida. The purpose of this interview with Leib was to discuss his road as a playwright that as well as his plays. Although, the narrative is a bit long, it contains invaluable information for writers in all stages of their careers.

EAF: Well here we are Mark for the first question are you a native Floridian?

LEIB: I was born in Tampa General Hospital.

EAF: Tell us a little of your background?

LEIB: All right, I was born on Tampa. My father owns a department store in Ybor City, along with his brother and his father, and I grown up and went to public school in the Tampa Bay area. I went to Gorrie Elementary School, HP Plant High School; and then when I graduated from plant I was accepted at Harvard as an undergraduate. So, I knew that I loved writing, but I didn’t think you could make a living from it. My parents wanted me to be a doctor or a lawyer. So I decided to major in government, which I thought would be useful for a pre-law major, but up there in New England, I discovered that some people were making a living as writers, and I changed my direction. So, even though I continued to be enrolled as a government concentrator, and I got a magna cum laude in government when I graduated, I was spending most of my time working

Ailing Andy Whitfield Leaves Spartacus to Battle Recurring Cancer

It was announced yesterday that Welsh actor Andy Whitfield has left his role as Spartacus on the Starz's Original series Spartacus: Blood and Sand to fight a recurring round of cancer. Back March of this year, Whitfield was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and he completed his treatment in June. It was thought then that his prognosis was good. However the recurrence of the disease has force the actor to quit his role, which was based loosely on the historical Spartacus, and enter more aggressive treatment for the disease.

As fans of Mr. Whitfield ours prayers go out to him and his family.

MESSAGE FROM STARZ

Andy Whitfield, star of Starz's "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," has been advised by his doctors to immediately resume aggressive treatment for a recurrence of cancer, as a result of which he will not be returning for the series' second season, which was tentatively set to air in September 2011.
"It's with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus and all the wonderful people involved. It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey. Thank you sincerely for the support so far," said Whitfield.
"Our hearts and prayers are with Andy and his family during this difficult time," said Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht. "Andy is not only an incredible actor whose portrayal of Spartacus made an indelible impression on Starz audiences, he is also an amazing human being whose courage, strength, and grace in the face of adversity have inspired all of us."
No decisions have yet been made about the future of the series. "Right now, we just want to extend our concern and support to Andy and his family," said Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director, Starz Media. "We will address our programming plans at some later date."
Starz still plans to air the prequel to Spartacus: Blood and Sand in January 2011. Entitled Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, it focuses on the House of Batiatus before Spartacus arrives in Capua and stars returning cast members John Hannah, Lucy Lawless, Peter Mensah and Manu Bennett, along with newcomer Dustin Clare.

Los Angeles, California (August 18, 2010) – Ernest Borgnine, who is exuberantly entering his seventh decade of creating memorable characters and award-winning performances, will receive Screen Actors Guild (SAG)’s most prestigious accolade-—the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award for career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment. Borgnine, who has performed in more than 200 motion pictures, five television series and dozens of television films and guest appearances, will be presented the Award, given annually to an actor who fosters the “finest ideals of the acting profession,” at the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards®, which premieres live on TNT and TBS on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, 7 p.m. CT, 6 p.m. MT.

In making today’s announcement, Screen Actors Guild National President Ken Howard said, “Whether portraying brutish villains, sympathetic everymen, complex leaders or hapless heroes, Ernest Borgnine has brought a boundless energy which, at 93, is still a hallmark of his remarkably busy life and career. It is with that same joyous spirit that we salute his impressive body of work and his steadfast generosity.”

Borgnine has been the recipient of industry recognition, critical praise and audience approbation throughout his career. He first drew the public eye in 1953 with his portrayal of the vicious Sergeant “Fatso” Judson, who beat Frank Sinatra’s Maggio to a pulpy death in the Oscar®-winning film “From Here to Eternity.” He was memorable as one of the thugs who threatened a one-armed Spencer Tracy in “Bad Day at Black Rock,” then did a 180-degree turn in 1955, starring for director Delbert Mann and screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky as the title character in what was to be the year’s best picture Oscar winner, “Marty.” His touching performance as the lonely butcher won Borgnine an Academy Award®, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe®. He would receive a second Golden Globe nomination some 52 years later for the title role in the telefilm “A Grandpa for Christmas” and an Independent Spirit Award nomination in 1989 for his Mafia boss in “Spike of Bensonhurst.”

During the ‘50s, Borgnine performed frequently on such Golden Age of Television masterworks as “G.E. Theatre” and “Philco Playhouse,” but it was the 1962-66 broad ensemble comedy “McHale’s Navy” that would cement his presence as a household name and earn Borgnine his first Emmy® nomination in 1963. The Television Academy would again nominate Borgnine in 1980 for his portrait of World War I soldier Stanislaus Katczinsky in the Hallmark Hall of Fame production of “All Quiet on the Western Front” (again under Delbert Mann’s direction) and just last year for his guest role as a devoted husband coming to terms with his wife’s imminent death in the final episode of “ER.”

Borgnine was also the recipient in 1999 of a Daytime Emmy nomination for his voice work as Carface in the animated “All Dogs Go to Heaven: The Series” and the same year began his continuing run as the voice of semi-retired aquatic superhero Mermaid Man in the Nickelodeon smash-hit “SpongeBob SquarePants,” bringing him a whole new legion of young fans. He’s also played an animated version of himself on “The Simpsons.”

Borgnine was born Ermes Effron Borgnino on Jan. 24, 1917 in Hamden, Conn., son of Italian immigrants Charles (fka Camillo) and Anna Borgnino and grandson of Count Paolo Boselli, financial advisor to Italian King Victor Emmanuel. When he was 2, his parents separated, and he moved to Italy with his mother until the family reunited in Connecticut when Borgnine was 5. After he graduated high school in 1935, finding factory work and driving a vegetable truck did not suit him, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was discharged in October 1941, but a few months later, when the United States entered World War II, he re-enlisted and served until 1945, rising to the rank of Gunner’s Mate 1st Class. After the war, at his mother’s suggestion and with funds from the GI Bill, he enrolled in the Randall School of Dramatic Arts in Hartford, and then honed his craft at the famed Barter Theatre in Abington, Va.. There where he painted scenery, worked as stagehand and drove a truck yet-again, eventually getting a shot at acting in numerous classics. He even traveled with the company to entertain U.S. servicemen in Germany and Denmark, in the role of Guildenstern in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.”

Borgnine’s big break came in 1949, when he won the role of the hospital attendant in a Broadway production of “Harvey.” His success in live television prompted a move to Los Angeles, where in 1951, he made his motion picture debut in “The Whistle at Eaton Falls.” The staggering catalog of his 200 motion pictures since includes such classics as “Johnny Guitar,” starring Joan Crawford; “Vera Cruz,” with Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster; “The Catered Affair,” opposite Bette Davis; legendary ensemble pieces like Robert Aldrich’s “The Dirty Dozen” and Sam Peckinpah’s “The Wild Bunch”; and large-scale productions like “The Vikings,” “Torpedo Run,” “Emperor of the North,” “Ice Station Zebra,” “Flight Of The Phoenix,” “Escape from New York” and “The Poseidon Adventure.” He portrayed controversial FBI founder J. Edgar Hoover in the 1983 telefilm “Blood Feud” and again in the feature “Hoover,” which he also executive produced. He also played real-life boxing coach Angelo Dundee opposite Muhammad Ali (as himself) in “The Greatest.” His latest film “Red,” starring Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Richard Dreyfuss and Brian Cox, opens in October.

Besides “McHale’s Navy,” Borgnine’s television credits include starring as seasoned police office Joe Cleaver in “Future Cop” (1976-77), as veteran aircraft owner Dominic Santini “Airwolf” (1984-86), and as doorman Manny Cordoba in “The Single Guy” (1995-97). Among his telefilms and miniseries are “Jesus of Nazareth”; “The Trail to Hope Rose,” for which, at age 87, he drove a team of horses and was honored with the Wrangler Award from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame; and this year’s “Wishing Well.” He had a recurring role on “The Commish” and guest starred in numerous series, including “JAG,” “Early Edition,” “Walker, Texas Ranger,” “Little House on the Prairie,” “Touched By An Angel,” “7th Heaven,” “Family Law” and “The District.” He even appeared in the first “Center Square” in the “Hollywood Squares” when the game show premiered in 1965.

Borgnine has received Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Columbia College Hollywood, Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Lakeland College in Mikwaukee and the University of Northern Alabama. Still deeply connected to Navy years, he maintains contacts with old shipmates from his destroyer days. He was recognized for his support of the Navy Memorial Fund with the Lone Sailor award from the Navy Memorial Foundation and was named an Honorary Chief Petty Officer by the Navy Chiefs. Some 20 years ago, he acquired another Naval title: Honorary Flight Leader for the Navy’s Flight Demonstration Team: The Blue Angels. In 2000, the Veterans Foundation elected him Veteran of the Year. As he celebrated his 90th birthday, he was honored with the California Commendation Medal for his support of the military by the Commanding Officer of the California National Guard. In 2009, he participated in a special tribute to the Navy at the National Memorial Day Parade presented by the American Veterans Center in Washington, D.C.

In 1985, Borgnine received the Motion Picture and Television Fund’s Golden Boot Award for his work in film and television Westerns. In 1990, he was named Honorary Mayor of Universal City, where “McHale’s Navy” was filmed. In 1997, the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival honored him with the King Vidor Memorial Award. The National Film Theatre of Great Britain honored him in May 2001 for a lifetime of artistic achievement. In 2009, he received a special tribute at the Almería, Spain International Film Festival and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhode Island International Film Festival, which screened his then-latest feature “Another Harvest Moon,” in which he starred opposite Piper Laurie, Anne Meara and Doris Roberts.

In 2002, Borgnine received a lifetime achievement award from his mother’s birthplace, Carpi, Italy. In honor of his Italian parentage, he received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. For a quarter century, he marched as the Grand Clown in “The Great Circus Parade” in Milwaukee. A Freemason for 60 years, he is proud to have been honored with the 33rd Degree of the Masonic Order of the Grand Cross. He was honorary chair of the Scottish Rite RiteCare Program, which sponsors 175 childhood language disorders clinics, centers and programs nationwide, and narrated “On the Wings of Words,” a film about the RiteCare Program.

Borgnine’s 2008 autobiography, “Ernie” was a “New York Times” bestseller. He lives in Beverly Hills with his wife of 37 years, Tova, QVC’s on camera spokesperson for Tova cosmetics,

Maf and Marilyn But No Jolie

“Angelina Jolie won't be playing Marilyn Monroe in a movie telling Monroe's story from a "dog's-eye view," according to her management”. This byline from the Ministry of Gossip opens many debates and objections from fans about actress Angelina Jolie playing the role of Marilyn Monroe opposite a lapdog named Maf.

In due respect to the talent of both femme fatales, I've lived long enough to have watched both actresses, and as far stardom goes Angelina Jolie and Marilyn Monroe are in two different classes. Jolie, a highly versatile actress is far better in performing her portrayals and an undisputed action queen. Off screen, she is a wife to famed actor Brad Pitt, a mother several times over, and a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador. While Monroe the undisputed sex goddess of her era never expanded beyond the role of a B-girl/ pin-up girl image of the 50s and 60s on screen and in her private life. It is not that Jolie could not pull off the role of playing the tragic Monroe, animated or live-action; I believe she can, but it is harder to imagine Monroe filling Jolie's military gear.

Although both actresses experienced early troubled lives, after much pain, Angelina Jolie discovered who she was and her importance in life, whereas Monroe troubles grew and eventually led her to suicide. Does this mean that an actress more akin to the statue of Marilyn Monroe should play the part? Not at all, it is only that the roles that Jolie has featured in, she appears to have grown away from playing roles that required eye candy for those roles where women are more aggressive, and proactive.

So what does this all mean in terms of Jolie playing opposite a dog in an film adaptation of author Andrew O’Hagan’s novel The Life And Opinions Of Maf The Dog, And Of His Friend Marilyn Monroe?

When it comes to Angelina Jolie, Maf will have to find another bone to chew.

Speaking Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Sam Raimi controversial series, based very loosely on the historical Spartacus and the Roman gladiators’ way of life, was ignored for 2010 Emmy Nominations, which will air on July 31st. Is there a message in this for the director of this Starz original series? If so, would it be cut out the porn? Nevertheless, Raimi has the go ahead for the mid-season prequel to Spartacus: B &S, which is entitled, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, tells the story of the House of Batiatus and stars Lucy Lawless and John Hannah. Will this series be less raunchy than Spartacus: B &S, probably not, but there is better programming out there.

The wizardly Merlin’s popularity is on the rise. That is, Starz’ Original is casting, Royal Shakespearean actor Joseph Fiennes in the role of a 30ish something protagonist to King Arthur in their new original series, Camelot. Fiennes has just finished working on his role as Agent Mark Benford in the canceled television series FlashFoward. Fans of the Irish- born actor will probably remember his memorable performances in Shakespeare in Love as Will Shakespeare (1998); Elizabeth as Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester (1998); Luther as Martin Luther (2003); and The Merchant of Venice as Bassanio.

This weekend marks the final episodes for Legend of the Seeker, but we the loyal fans of the series hope that it is not the series finale. After much petitioning from various corners of the world, which included a

paid ad, no word has come from ABC Production on whether they will save the show for at least a third

season, and from other sources no official
cancellation announcement from ABC would be uncommon.

Nevertheless, we wish Bridget Regan, Craig Horner, Craig Parker, Bruce Spence, and Tabrett Bethell the best of luck in their next endeavors.

A year later, the spoke person for DC Comic stated that Chloe would not become a comic character in their Smallville graphic novels. Regardless of this disappointing news, this Smallville female superhero might not have superpower (that is not all the times) but she is the brain behind the “Watchtower”, the secret lair of the emerging Justice League. She is also Clark Kent's best friend, and the first person outside of the Kent’s family to knows his duel identity.

Chloe can also be dangerous to cross and will take out any threat to Clark and the other members of the Watchtower.

Legend of the Seeker: Unbroken - A Prelude Before the Storm

On Legend of the Seeker, Episode 21 - Unbroken, to break the dark magic used to turn Cara back to Darken Rahl evil side, Zed cast a powerful spell that not only reversed Darken Rahl hold on Cara but changed time for everyone.

Zed's spell sent everyone back to the time where Richard Cypher and Kahlan Amnell, the Mother Confessor were trying to gain the power of Orden from the three boxes of Orden and destroy Darken Rahl. This did occur in their real time, but after Zed's attempt to save Cara from Darken Rahl dark spell, time was altered in an unexpected way under Zed's point of view and that of the viewer as well.

The happy wedding of Richard and Kahlan was the first clue, and Darken Rahl marrying them was more than a little creepy but in a delicious Darken Rahl way.

As the episode moves forward, we learn why the drastic change in reality. When Zed cast his spell breaker on Cara, she was sent back to a time where she avoided being made into a Mord'Sith. This changed reality for everyone and was the result of Darken Rahl failure to stop Richard gaining the power of Orden because Cara was never around to interfere with the ceremony to extract the power from the three boxes and Richard gained the power that allow him to command loyalty from his enemies, including Darken Rahl.

Not only was this change in reality irksome to Zed, it caused the Keeper of the Underworld great distress, and he then commanded the Sisters of the Dark to break the bond of the three boxes of Orden. When this happens Richard loses his power over Darken Rahl, the battle between the two men ends with Darken Rahl gaining the power of Orden, and Richard enslaved to him.

Part two of this intense episode begins Saturday, May 22, 2010 with Episode 22 - Tears. The two-day season finale and probable series finale ends on that following Sunday, May 23, 2010.

Below is an excerpt for TV Q&A with Rob Owen to the question that has plagued all of us Legend of the Seeker Fans since it was first announced as canceled.

Q: Has 'Legend of the Seeker' been officially canceled? ABC hasn't released an official cancellation statement, so fans are using their hard-earned money to try and save the show. I'm all for fan campaigns, but I'd hate to be using my money to try and save something that's already dead and buried. However, if there's even a sliver of hope that I could help bring back a show that brings me one hour of happiness per week, I'd be all for it.
Should we expect to hear the bad news shortly or might there be other reasons for the delayed announcement?

Rob: Networks generally do not announce show cancellations (unless it's a long-running hit series and they want publicity about it ending). Journalists report when a show has been canceled but if you're waiting for an official cancellation notice, you'll be waiting forever. Personally, I think a fan campaign at this point is a waste of money. Once Tribune stations pulled out and declined to air future seasons of the syndicated series, the business model was broken.
A publicist for the show confirmed "Legend" has been canceled and a third season will not be produced. The series finale will air the weekend of May 22 with reruns airing through the fall.
Thank you for being a thinking (not blind) fan. Sometimes people get a little lost in their appreciation for TV series.

So, this is it. Another television original has been killed off because of a lack in viewership. If fans of fantasy/adventure truly want to their series to last beyond the 1-2-season chopping blocks, more interesting in watching the series must come from them, and from the numbers of viewers who come out to the theaters for big screen fantasy and sci-fi adventure flicks, we know the fans are out there.

Hey, why cry over what's lost now. Our beloved Legend of the Seeker ends next Saturday and Sunday with a two-day series finality. Cable viewers can catch it on WGN next weekend.

However, if you strongly believe the series can be saved go to the link and pledge your vote to save the series.

Seeker fans put their money where they hope TV execs' eyes are.

For the faithful fans of Legend of the Seeker , the series will live on for a third season, and they are willing to fund an ad campaign to see to it. But will it be enough for the producers (ABC/Disney) of the adventure series to take the risk and air the series regardless of the fact that Legend of the Seeker has been dropped by many of the major syndicated networks?

Only time will tell.
